Underinsured motorist coverage

Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage should be added to your automobile insurance policy.  UIM coverage will pay amounts that are not paid by the liability insurance policy of the defendant.  For example, most drivers on the road only have $30,000 minimum insurance policies.  If you are in a serious car wreck, your damages will easily exceed this amount.  If the other driver doesn't have enough coverage, you may be left holding the bag.  This is what UIM is for, it covers you.  If the you had $100,000 UIM coverage, this policy would then pay $70,000 if the damages warranted the payment.  UIM gets a credit for what the primary liability policy has paid.  UIM is typically inexpensive and it may help cover you in a car wreck with an underinsured driver.
