Blumenthal Jewish Home

2015 REVIEW: Blumenthal Nursing & Rehabilitation has fallen to a 2 star "below average" nursing home. The most significant and obvious problem is their low staffing numbers.

BLUMENTHAL NURSING & REHABILITATION CENTER Staffing NORTH CAROLINA AVERAGE NATIONAL AVERAGE
Total number of residents 126 87.2 87.4
Total number of licensed nurse staff hours per resident per day 1 hour and 18 minutes 1 hour and 39 minutes 1 hour and 40 minutes
RN hours per resident per day 30 minutes 46 minutes 50 minutes
LPN/LVN hours per resident per day 48 minutes 53 minutes 50 minutes
CNA hours per resident per day 2 hours and 11 minutes 2 hours and 24 minutes 2 hours and 27 minutes
Physical therapy staff hours per resident per day 9 minutes 6 minutes 6 minutes

As you can see, the full RN staffing levels is about 33% less than the North Carolina average. Also, the LPN and CNA levels are lower than the state average. The average nursing home in North Carolina is already understaffed. So, it is a real problem to have even fewer staff than the average.

Heath Inspection- in Blumenthal's last health inspection it received 8 health deficiencies. The average in NC is only 4 deficiencies. Most of these deficiences were for low to minimal harm situations.

Quality Measures- are actually 5 stars which as high as you can get. The only category that appeared really low was the pneumonia vaccine that wasn't given as much as it should. These are good quality measure scores, so the staff at Blumenthals must be working very hard to get such numbers. Normally with below average staffing they quality measures would be lower. If you have a loved one in Blumenthals just make sure that you watch their condition as the lower staff numbers can lead to problems.

Conclusion- Blumenthals ranking has fallen over the years. The staffing levels appear below average, and this is the primary indicator of whether or not residents will get good care in the future. On the other hand, their quality measures appear really good. So, for now Blumenthals is doing a good job with the staff that they have and this is a recommended home.

Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehab

2014 REVIEW: Last year, Blumenthals Nursing Home had a three star rating for staffing but this year it was raised to four stars which is "above average". I have left the 2013 staffing information, which is below the line at the bottom of this post. As for the 2014, Blumenthals had:

As you can see, this is improved but still a mixed result. The number of actual nurses still is below the state average. Blumenthals has 1 hour and 34 minutes of LPN and RN care per patient day. NC average is 1 hour and 38 minutes. So, Blumenthals is right at and just below the average. On the other hand, there was a considerable improvement in CNA staffing which is now above average. Overall, this is a good improvement as CNAs are responsible for 80% of all care a resident receives.

The Quality Measures at Blumenthals were five stars "much above average". This means fall incidence was low, low pressure sores, low malnutrition etc. Their last inspection only had three deficiences which is very good. Also, the last deficiency wasn't even patient related but was administrative.

So, Blumenthals has typically been a decent nursing home. The increase in staffing from last year should make it even better. Universal Healthcare is a chain, and they own this home. Hopefully, they will continue improvements. If you want to compare other Greensboro Nursing Homes, click on my Nursing Home Review.

2013 REVIEW: Blumenthal nursing home is located at 3724 Wireless Drive in Greensboro. Blumenthal is a 134 bed facility, which is larger than most nursing homes in NC. According to Medicare nursing home compare, Blumenthal is a five star facility, which is the highest rating it can get. As always, the star system doesn't completely reflect the true state of a nursing home. One of the main things to look at are staffing levels. The Blumenthal nursing home is a three star facility for staffing, which is average:

The only staffing that is low is the LPN staffing level. As you can see, the LPN level at Blumenthal is 42 minutes and the average in NC is 52 minutes. Of course, this means that most nursing homes have 25% more LPN hours than Blumenthal. Since this LPN level is so low, I can't put Blumenthal in the top tier of nursing homes that I have ranked in the Greensboro area.

History- Originally, Blumenthal was started in 1962 for the Jewish community of North and South Carolina. In the 1990's this population declined in the home. Blumenthal was then bought by Universal Healthcare/Blumenthal, Inc., who currently runs this home. Universal Healthcare owns multiple facilities and the facilities are managed by Choice Health Management. The owner of Choice Health is Don Beaver, who helped start the Brian Center nursing home chain. Mr. Beaver also was/is a co-owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Even though I am a nursing home abuse attorney, my goal is to inform the public. If people know which homes are best, it will help make sure the elderly get better care. Also, my hope is that this will create economic pressure on the under-performing nursing homes to improve staffing and overall care.
