Kindred has a truly unusual staffing pattern. Their overall licensed nursing levels are twice the national average. Of course, this is absolutely outstanding. This reflects the type of care that they can provide. My understanding is that this is one of the few long term care facilities in the area that can take a resident on a ventilator. Such vent care requires high numbers of skilled nurses, which they have.
What Kindred nursing home doesn’t have are CNAs. It is inexplicable that a facility with residents in such bad shape would have so few CNAs. Kindred has 1 hour and 38 minutes of CNAs while the state average is 2 hours and 26 minutes. In a nutshell, the average NC nursing home has 2X the number of CNAs that Kindred has. Facilities with high acuity level residents and low CNA staffing almost always have problems. They just can’t get the work done. Usual signs are lack of turning and positioning, residents not getting fed properly, not being cleaned and diapers changed, not got out of bed etc. If such problems exist, you will see malnutrition, dehydration, skin breakdown such as pressure sores, etc.
Quality Measures: It seems that I was right. Take a look at the Kindred quality measures Kindred is in bold then NC average and US average and lower is better:
Percent of long-stay residents with a urinary tract infection. 29.8% 7.8% (400% higher than the NC average which is incredibly poor)
Percent of long-stay residents who self-report moderate to severe pain.16.0% 11.1% 10.1%
Percent of long-stay high-risk residents with pressure ulcers. 27.3% 7.5% (Almost 400% higher) 6.4%
Percent of long-stay residents who lose too much weight. 12.8% 9.0% 7.3%
The above percentages are the worst that I have ever seen at a nursing home in North Carolina. However, we all must realize that Kindred takes residents on vents. These are very sick people with acuity levels higher than other nursing homes. Naturally, they will have higher instances of UTIs, pressure sores and pain. Even having said this 400% is extremely high, and it should be indefensible with their low CNA staffing levels. I will bet that the Kindred RNs are having to provide some CNA type care.
If you have anyone in Kindred Hospital’s long term care facility, you will need to watch the basic day to day care such as food, water and being kept clean and dry. They will most likely struggle to get their job done with these low staffing numbers. If you want to compare these staffing levels to other local nursing homes, look at my Greensboro Area nursing home review.
