We recently had the opportunity to donate to the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer. The Foundation is a public nonprofit 501 (c)(3) foundation that provides financial and emotional support to children and their families.
The organization strives to educate the public by providing grant funding for innovative research to accelerate progress in the ongoing battle against pediatric cancer. The Foundation was established in 1994, in honor of a young boy named Michael Hoefflin, who eventually succumbed to brain cancer.
Today, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation is actively working to help put an end to children’s cancer in all of its forms. The Foundation’s goal is to:
- Find better treatments and cures through medical research
- Promote awareness about childhood cancer
- Assist children and their families through outreach programs

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is diagnosed in 1 out of every 285 children under the age of 20 in the United States. The types of cancers seen in children are often different from those that develop in adults. Unlike adults, childhood cancers are not strongly linked to lifestyle or environmental factors, instead, they are linked to DNA changes in cells that take place early in life.
Some of the most common types of childhood cancers include leukemia, brain tumors, lymphoma, and retinoblastoma. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and other forms of treatment.
