River Landing is one of the top nursing homes in the Greensboro area. It was just built in 2003 and it is beautiful. It has more than 150 acres of land in Colfax, with ponds and a golf course on the property. I have visited River Landing before, and I was impressed. The place was clean and people seemed happy. It was nice to walk into a nursing home and not be floored with the usual smell of chemicals and urine like many other homes. Of course, my focus is one the nursing care and not the property itself. River Landing is a five-star facility, which is the highest score possible. River Landing only has 60 skilled beds which are fairly small compared to other homes.

Staffing- As you can see, the staffing levels at River Landing far exceed the North Carolina and national averages. RN hours are very high. RNs can provide primary assessments and have more training than LPNs. Also, CNA staffing is far higher. In my opinion, this is the most important indicator of good care. Good CNA levels = typically good care. River Landing has 3 hours and 12 minutes of CNA staffing per resident per day. This is a very high level.
Quality Measures- River Landing got five stars which is much above average. Quality Measures takes a look at how the residents are doing there. However, when I look at their Quality Measures it looks just average. Almost all of these measures are near the NC average and not above. Also, the weight loss indicator appeared to be far below average. At River Landing, 25% of the long term residents lost too much weight and the average in North Carolina was 9.2%. This is a very high percentage, and I don't understand why. In my assessment, River Landing has been overrated for Quality Measures. Their short term measures are fantastic and this may be skewing the results. In other words, residents who are there for short time frames have outstanding Quality Measures. Don't get me wrong, this is still a very good facility. I have never heard of any problems coming out of this nursing home. However, I will start monitoring this in the future to see if this is a trend for their long term care residents.
Inspections- River Landing received four stars for inspections which are above average. This is too low. River Landing only got 1 deficiency during the last inspection and the average number of deficiencies in NC is 3.2. Of course, this means that River Landing got 1/3 of the average deficiencies. This is fantastic and deserves five stars. Also, one deficiency was only for food storage and had nothing to do with nursing care.
Summary- River Landing at Sandy Ridge is an outstanding nursing home. The property is absolutely beautiful and the staffing levels are very high. This is consistently one of the best nursing homes in the Greensboro area.
